Visualizing Science: Turning Complex Climate Research Into Compelling Visual Narratives

Event Date:
December 3, 2025

Join Metcalf Institute and Solutions Journalism Network for an inside look at the Synergy Project, a multi-year collaboration between Art League RI, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and the University of Rhode Island which formed scientist-artist pairs to create a common language for science communication. Attendees will meet two Synergy pairs, whose projects transform cutting-edge research on microbial ocean chemistry and marine snow into evocative visual narratives, revealing how analogy, personification, and abstract art can help audiences grasp complex, unseen climate and ocean processes. The discussion will explore how collaboration forced both scientists and artists to learn about each other's ways of thinking and reimagine their own work. Journalists looking to deepen their climate reporting and rethinking how to visualize climate will find new approaches and inspiration for making the invisible visible and connecting scientific discovery to the communities they serve.
