Awards and Grants

In 750 words, describe how you or someone in your community is making meaningful strides to lessen modern Western society's impact on the environment. The contest is open to students between the ages of 17 and 24 (as of January 1, 2013) who are currently enrolled in a college or other institute of higher education. Entry deadline: Nov 27, 2013.

Presented for best print, broadcast and online media coverage of the UN, its agencies and field operations, the Awards are open to all journalists, anywhere in the world, for the best book, story, radio or TV program or series. Cash prizes. Deadline is Sep 30, 2025.

The Award is given by the New York Public Library to the author(s) of outstanding, full-length books resulting from print, broadcast, or electronic journalism that raises public awareness of current issues, events or policies. Winner receives a $15,000 prize. Nomination deadline is Sep 3, 2025.

 The American Association for the Advancement of Science awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. Entries are accepted from journalists worldwide in all categories. Cash prizes. Deadline: Aug 1 annually.

This annual competition, presented by Young Reporters for the Environment, recognizes inspired stories, photos and videos about local environmental issues from 11-18 year olds. Win great prizes for your school. Deadline: Mar 28, 2025.

Journalists working for U.S., Canadian or Mexican newspapers, magazine, broadcast organizations (including cable) or online sites accessible to the general public are eligible to apply, as are freelancers. $5,000 prize. Deadline is Mar 15, 2018.

This American Meteorological Society Award recognizes outstanding science reporting and writing about scientific discoveries, principles, advances, and impacts in all media outlets including radio, television, newspaper, magazine, and online. Apply by May 1st.

The biennial Wildscreen Festival in the UK is a celebration of wildlife filmmaking and photography. The annual Panda Awards celebrate the craft of wildlife filmmaking and photography and honor the very best that the industry is producing. 2025 deadlines: Feb 25 (early); Apr 17 (regular); May 13 (late).

The Asian American Journalists Association is accepting nominations for the 2025 Journalism Excellence Awards until Feb 12.  Established in 1987, the awards recognize and encourage excellence among journalists and outstanding coverage of Asian American and Pacific Islander issues by AAJA members.

FIJ awards grants up to $10,000 for stories that break new ground and expose wrongdoing in the public and private sectors. Next deadline is Jan 30, 2026. Plus, seed grants up to $2,500, follow-up grants for timely stories after initial investigations and for those who've previously received a seed grant.
